Sonoma Overlook Trail

December 10, 2011

This is the view from the stalwart stone bench at the top of the trail. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic. If it’s taken, there are a few more stone seats just like it placed along the loop, each one affording a different view over the Valley of the Moon and hills to the bay.

Even a toddler can make it to the top of the trail without too much drama along the way. At a snails pace, it might take little over a half hour to reach the top. But, if you like to take an especially leisurely stroll, there are a handful of thoughtfully placed benches along the trail on the way up. Nearly half the trail is shaded with oaks, manzanita, and bay—quite welcome on a hot day.

Don’t overlook the old hillside Sonoma cemetery at the trailhead. It can make for some fascinating exploring, with some of the head stones dating back to gold rush days.

To get there:
The trailhead is ½ mile north of the Plaza on West 1st Street. Look for it on the right at the entrance to the cemetery.
