Sonoma Overlook Trail

November 9, 2011

The best (if certainly not the easiest!) hikes to take with kids are those with a goal in mind. This community trail just north of the Sonoma Plaza winds a mile up through hillside meadows and oak-studded woodland to loop around a hilltop vantage point with views sweeping over the Sonoma Valley southward across the bay to Mt. Diablo in the southeast and the Marin coastal range in the southwest. A stalwart stone bench along the south rim takes in the best of the view and makes an ideal spot for a picnic lunch.

A handful of thoughtfully placed benches along the trail offer rest for the weary. The old hillside Sonoma cemetery at the trailhead can also make for some fascinating exploring, with some of the head stones dating back to gold rush days.

To get there:

The trailhead is just ½ mile north of the Plaza on West 1st Street. Look for it on the right at the entrance to the cemetery.
